Recovery after liposuction

General information, not medical advice. This guide explains treatments in general terms. It cannot tell you whether a treatment is right or safe for you. Discuss your health, medicines and expectations with a licensed doctor before any procedure. Read our medical review policy.

Recovery after liposuction is gradual. Most of the work happens in the first few weeks, but the final shape can take several months to appear as swelling settles. Your surgeon's instructions take priority over any general timeline, including this one.

The first days

Expect soreness, bruising and swelling. Small incisions may leak fluid for a day or two, which is often normal. Most surgeons encourage gentle walking from the first day to reduce the risk of blood clots. Take pain relief only as prescribed, and check before taking anti-inflammatory medicines or supplements that affect bleeding.

Compression garments

A compression garment supports the treated areas, helps reduce swelling and may help the skin settle evenly. Surgeons commonly advise wearing it most of the day and night for several weeks. A garment that is too tight, folds or rubs can cause problems, so ask for refitting if needed.

Returning to normal activity

Activity General guide (your surgeon may advise differently)
Walking From the first day
Desk work Often within one to two weeks
Light exercise After a few weeks
Strenuous exercise and lifting Usually from about four to six weeks
Swimming and baths After incisions have healed

Some clinics offer lymphatic drainage massage after surgery. Ask your surgeon whether it is suitable for you and when to start.

Warning signs

Seek urgent medical help if you have any of the following:

In Thailand, the emergency medical number is 1669.

Recovering away from home

If you have travelled for surgery, stay near the clinic until the surgeon has checked you and agreed that you can fly. Ask who to contact out of hours and what follow-up is available once you are home. A local doctor at home should have a copy of your operation notes.

Specialist centres

Some Bangkok centres focus entirely on fat reduction and liposuction and include aftercare as part of treatment. Ask any provider exactly what follow-up visits, garments and support are included in the price.
