Liposuction in Thailand
Liposuction removes fat from beneath the skin through small incisions using a thin tube called a cannula, attached to suction. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic operations worldwide and is widely offered in Thailand.
Who it suits
Liposuction changes shape rather than weight. It tends to suit people who:
- are near a stable weight they can maintain
- have areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise, such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms or under the chin
- have reasonably elastic skin, since loose skin may not tighten after fat is removed
- are in good general health, without uncontrolled heart, lung or blood-clotting problems
It does not treat cellulite, and it does not remove the deeper fat around the internal organs that is linked with health risks.
The operation
Most surgeons use the tumescent technique. A large volume of fluid containing a local anaesthetic and adrenaline is injected into the area first, which numbs it and reduces bleeding. The surgeon then moves the cannula through the fat layer to remove fat. Some techniques use ultrasound, laser or radiofrequency energy alongside suction; see VASER and BodyTite.
Depending on the size of the treatment, it may be done under local anaesthetic with sedation, or under general anaesthetic. Larger procedures belong in a hospital or a facility licensed for that level of anaesthesia, with an anaesthetist present.
Risks to discuss
- Uneven contours, dents or rippling
- Fluid collections (seroma) and bruising
- Numbness or altered skin sensation
- Infection
- Blood clots in the legs that can travel to the lungs
- Reactions to anaesthesia, including local anaesthetic toxicity when large volumes are used
- Fat embolism and injury to internal organs, which are rare but serious
The risk rises with the amount of fat removed and the number of areas treated in one session. Ask the surgeon how much they plan to remove and whether combining procedures adds risk for you.
Recovery
Expect swelling, bruising and soreness, and to wear a compression garment for several weeks. Many people return to desk work within a week or two, but final results take months to show as swelling settles. More detail is in recovery after liposuction.
If you are travelling for surgery
Flying soon after surgery increases the risk of blood clots. Ask the surgeon how long to stay before flying home and plan for follow-up checks in Thailand. Our guide to medical travel to Thailand covers visas and planning.
Providers in Thailand
Liposuction is offered by plastic surgeons in private hospitals and specialist centres. Whoever you consider, check that the surgeon is licensed and has specialist training, and that the facility is licensed for the anaesthesia planned.
